News:
The Realise Live award for 2007 has been awarded to DHAFER YOUSSEF & VOX CLAMANTIS, whose SACRED VOICES project will now tour in the spring to the three UK venues.
The award by the venue programmers was made after careful deliberation and research into the different projects and interviews with each of the short-listed artists.
The Sacred Voices project will be the first time that Vox Clamantis have toured the UK, despite great interest in their recordings here and the first project to focus on Dhafer Youssef’s voice which has been a highlight of his live shows.
The £23,000 funding for the Sacred Voices project will support the composition, marketing and production of the one-off show that’s unlikely to be repeated.
Thanking the many producers, arrangers and performers who applied for the Realise Live funding, the organisers were conscious that there should be future opportunities for those who didn’t get an award in 2006.
William Trevelyan, Music Officer at South Hill Park, said “It’s been a great opportunity for artists to brainstorm new work and hopefully there will be more opportunities. I think we chose the best idea, but we all think there really were a number of deserving winners.”

Project Details:
Sacred Voices is a special project bringing together two universally acclaimed talents, Tunisian vocalist and Oud player Dhafer Youssef and Estonian choir Vox Clamantis. Both voices draw on the heritage of sacred music to create powerfully emotive sounds that are both ancient and modern.
Both artists are noted for their innovation. Dhafer Youssef has performed & worked with Omar Sosa, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Nils Petar Molvaer, Markus Stockhausen, Iva Bittova, Carlo Rizzo, Nguyên Lê, Jatinder Thakur amongst many others.
Meanwhile international singing group Vox Clamantis are an extraordinary anomaly, interested in merging Gregorian Chant with early polyphony and the organ music by Estonia’s best known composer, Arvo Pärt. Their recordings with Estonian organist Aare-Paul Lattik, have received particularly positive international feedback. Their regular composer is the wonderful Helen Tulve.

PRESS FOR DHAFER YOUSSEF
"Youssef's music marries ancient meditative sounds of Arabic origin with up-to-the-second electronica, fractured acoustic funk and jazz-influenced improvisation. Youssef's music continues to cast a considerable spell."
Mojo
"Aarset and Youssef have forged a thrilling new sound that could make Divine Shadows a crossover hit"
The Guardian
"I think we were lucky to be in that enchanted loft. We were seeing the beginning of something that is going to make waves."
The Evening Standard
PRAISE FOR VOX CLAMANTIS
"Vox Clamantis’s singing is sustained and unanimous in the melismatic chant of the Offertory, and of faultless intonation in a recitation from Isaiah, the mixed intervals of its organum perfectly marrying the worlds of plainsong and Pärt."
Nicholas Williams, BBC Music Magazine
